Port Latta Wind Farm will consist of seven wind turbines and have an installed capacity of approximately 25 MW (mega-Watt). The wind farm is expected to generate 90 GWh ( giga-Watt-hours) every year. 90 GWh energy generation is the equivalent of supplying the energy needs of 9,000 average Tasmanian households. The wind farm will be connected via underground cable to TasNetwork’s Port Latta substation which is less than one kilometre away.

The Project was approved by the Circular Head Council on 1 February 2019 and by the Tasmanian Environment Protection Authority on 8 February 2019.¬† It has been referred to the Commonwealth under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation¬†Act¬†1999 and was deemed to be ‘not a controlled action’.

It is estimated that the construction of the wind farm will involve capital expenditure in the order of 50 million dollars. The Proponent will endeavor to employ local contractors wherever possible, and there will be flow on effects to local services and hospitality industries. There will be up top 15 jobs associated with the on site construction works over an approximate six month period and regular visits to the site by maintenance crews throughout the 25 year life of the facility . It is likely that the wind turbine supplier, who will be responsible for the wind farm maintenance, will engage local personnel to operate and maintain the wind farm. Anyone engaged by the wind turbine supplier will likely be involved with other wind energy maintenance activities on the other wind farms in Tasmania.

The wind farm may be a tourist attraction, similar to the Bluff Point and Studland Bay Wind Farms and there could possibly be an enhancement of the ‘clean and green’ image of the Circular Head region through the production and increased use of renewable energy. This image provides an important market advantage for local produce and tourism.

Nekon Pty Ltd are planning to start construction of the project in late 2020.
